When Emily Bosworth was little, she saw a bride taking photos at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House in Edgartown and thought the woman must be a princess. Many years later, Emily donned an elegant gown of her own when she married Aidan Cassidy at the same location in a fall ceremony dotted with pink and orange flowers.
Emily grew up coming to the Vineyard, and the Island became important to Aidan as he got to know Emily and her family better. He even asked her parents for permission to marry her while at Bad Martha’s Farmer’s Brewery in Edgartown. The couple kicked off their wedding weekend with pizza and beer at the outdoor restaurant, followed by pickleball the next day at the Field Club and an after-party at The Wharf Restaurant & Pub. “We were so excited for everyone to be coming to the Island and to show them our favorite things,” Emily said.
To plan their wedding, they worked with Jamie Newhouse of Island Dreams Event Design. Emily referred to Newhouse as their “goalie” because she was the last line of defense in case the bride and groom forgot anything. And knowing she was there to handle the logistics of the day allowed Emily and Aidan to focus on the fun parts of wedding planning.
One of the best parts was the crafting, they said. The seating chart was made from decoupage oyster shells labeled with guests’ names and table assignments. In order to collect enough shells, Emily and Aidan began hitting happy hours and buck-a-shuck deals on the Vineyard and in New York City, where they live.
“It’s cool knowing that all the shells we made, a lot of people kept for Christmas ornaments,” Aidan said.
The numbers on each table were also handcrafted. Emily and her mom both love needlepoint, so the art form made its way to the reception. “I had fun designing different ones for each table,” Emily said. “Two of my mom’s friends helped me too…. They were excited to come to the wedding and see the things they had made.”
The family worked to put their personal touch on the wedding too: Emily’s dad surprised the couple with a rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” at the end of his speech. With the help of Newhouse, he had sent out postcards with the lyrics to all the guests ahead of time, who stood up to join him in song.
“In that moment, we looked over at each other,” Aidan said. “Every second line you’ve got two more people standing up and singing…. We felt so incredibly loved.”
