A few years after performers Charlie Januszewski and Webb Bankemper met inside a Nashville bar, they stood center stage before friends and family on Martha’s Vineyard and exchanged vows. Charlie, a pop musician, and Webb, who ran Dolly Parton’s social media accounts for years and now works in marketing for Broadway shows, naturally knew that music had to play a role in their wedding.
Live violins accompanied them down the aisle at their ceremony on the Harbor View Hotel’s porch. Afterwards, the entire wedding party marched behind saxophone players down Edgartown streets to Atria for the reception. The two said it was almost as if the town was celebrating with them – business owners came out of their shops to give them hugs and walkers nearby offered congratulations.
During the planning process, Charlie and Webb wanted every part of their day to reflect the life they built together, and deciding to wed on Martha’s Vineyard was central to that vision. Charlie has spent summers here his entire life, while Webb grew up on a horse farm outside of Nashville. The Island’s blend of farmland and sea felt like a fitting tribute to the environments that shaped them. They even created a custom symbol that appeared on their invitations and ceremony programs – a silhouette of a hippocampus, the Greek mythological creature with the body of a horse and the tail of a fish.
Other details were also personal. The day’s color scheme was inspired by the furniture in their first apartment together, and the reception tables were decorated with some of their favorite books. Even the flowers represented their relationship. At the rehearsal dinner, Tea Lane Farm’s floral arrangements were kept in small pots and as the wedding festivities continued over the weekend, the floral displays grew larger, symbolizing the way their love has evolved over time.
Planning a wedding on the Island was made easier by local vendors who, they said, approached their day with the same level of care and attention they would give their very first clients. “They will treat you like you are the most important thing in the world,” Charlie said.
The couple looked at several other weddings for inspiration while planning, but said the most memorable details came directly from their own lives and the Island’s natural beauty. “Lean into the [Vineyard], because this place is magic,” Webb advised. “If you’re lucky enough to be able to have a wedding here, bottle that magic, use it, and take that magic into your life, hopefully full of love.”
