One of the first times Mariah MacGregor and Johnny Arther hung out, she asked him to help her lift hay barrels at Sweetened Water Farm in Edgartown where she volunteers. In return, she thanked him with a tin of mints decorated with the smiling face of Fred Rogers. The gesture revealed a shared love of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. A year later, when Johnny proposed, they knew they needed to have a wedding that was just like the show: a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
Mariah, an Islander, wanted to marry Johnny, who moved here ten years ago after visiting in the summers, at a venue that felt both sentimental and intimate. After touring several locations, they decided the Chilmark Community Center in the heart of town was the best fit. “It felt meaningful to be there,” Mariah said, as it sits next to the Chilmark School, where she went as a child and has taught for the past fifteen years.
The couple, who planned their own wedding, knew it would be both challenging and expensive to host guests on the Vineyard during the busy summer months. So they chose to have it in the heart of winter, when the Island is at its most peaceful. Plus, Mariah had always dreamed of a winter wedding, when, she said, lights tend to shimmer more brightly and colors seem deeper.
For the vibe of the day, Mariah and Johnny embraced a Scottish theme as a nod to her heritage, transforming the wood-shingled community center into what they described as a medieval castle at Christmas. To achieve that look, they hung a tapestry from the wall displaying a unicorn and dragon as well as fairy lights and red and white lanterns from the ceiling. They exchanged vows underneath a wooden arbor built by Mariah’s dad and decorated with pine boughs.
When it was time for the reception, tables pushed against the wall were brought out for seating. Instead of hiring a caterer, the couple asked their guests to bring a homemade dish to share and held a potluck complete with brisket,
casseroles, salads, and even sautéed shrimp. As they enjoyed their first meal together, Mariah and Johnny drank from golden chalices.
Reflecting on their day, the couple said that weddings can be expensive, and that oftentimes more affordable, personal touches – such as the glassware they thrifted throughout their engagement for guests to use during the reception – are what make weddings magical. But, they said, at the end of the day, it’s not about aesthetics and perfection, rather the people present and the memories you create together.
