On a warm, sunny day this past fall, my family and I took a walk on the beach by the Edgartown Lighthouse. While out enjoying the fresh air and sunshine we ran into Island photographer Mila Lowe, who told us that she was there to capture a proposal. I got very excited. 

Over the years working for this publication, I’ve seen hundreds of photo galleries for surprise proposals – many of them from Mila herself. Now I was about to see one in person.  

Mila got a text from the boyfriend saying that they were on their way. She set off to find the perfect spot to set up her shot, so that when he got down on one knee the lighthouse and harbor would be in the background.

As my family and I strolled along the shoreline, I kept my eye on the path. After about ten minutes, I watched as a couple made their way toward the lighthouse hand-in-hand – the girlfriend unaware as to what was to come. They walked a little farther down the beach in the direction that Mila was hidden away. As he got down on one knee and Mila popped up to capture the scene, I grabbed my own husband’s hand, remembering the day he asked me to marry him.  

I hope the stories in this magazine help inspire the couple from the beach that day, along with all of the other couples who are planning to tie the knot on Martha’s Vineyard.
