Anna & Mike

A wedding that felt just like home.

Martha’s Vineyard has always been Anna Carney’s happy place. There’s a sense of peace and calm to the landscapes, a quiet magic in the sunshine and sparkling water, she said of the Island she has visited every year since she was thirteen.

That’s how her husband, Mike Weimer, makes her feel too. The pair grew up in the same town and were friends, but didn’t start dating until 2019. On their first visit to the Vineyard together, Anna learned Mike had also come a few times with his family while growing up. Their wedding last June at the Lambert’s Cove Inn & Resort in West Tisbury has only made them love the Vineyard more.

Their wedding included creative ideas that Anna had tucked away over the years. The invitation suite displayed some of their favorite Vineyard locations, such as the Gay Head Cliffs in Aquinnah and the West Tisbury Farmers’ Market. Picnic baskets with baguettes, jam, and wildflower seeds doubled as escort cards and party favors. And Val Cakes made a mini cake inspired by a different bridesmaid’s dress for each table at the reception, while Anna’s brother baked a coconut cake for the couple. “It felt so communal, and just like home and family,” Anna said.

Other memorable details came from family members. Anna’s mom suggested giving the alpacas at the inn bow ties. And while Anna’s grandmother, who is ninety-two and lives in Toronto, couldn’t make the weekend, the theme of strawberries and blueberries featured throughout the day were an ode to her grandmother’s childhood memories of picking berries in the summer. Those details showed up in the unripe blueberry sprigs on the groomsmen’s jackets, berries on the cakes and invitations, and strawberries on Anna’s dress under her getting-ready robe.

The wedding was held during the fiftieth anniversary of the release of Jaws, the iconic movie filmed on the Island. The couple discovered the weekend’s cinematic significance when looking for accommodations for guests and found that many hotel rooms had already been reserved for “finatics” coming to celebrate. But they were never stressed about it.

Instead, they embraced it, even though neither had seen the film. Mike jumped off Jaws Bridge the morning of the wedding, someone passed out Jaws shirts during the reception, and they framed that week’s edition of the Vineyard Gazette, which included a Jaws-themed Amity Gazette section.

The morning after their wedding, Anna and Mike were both wiped out, but on cloud nine, they said. The first thing they did as a married couple? Watched Jaws together.
