Lydia & Spencer

An outdoor Chilmark wedding with a pond view.

Summer on Martha’s Vineyard can involve unpredictable weather. But Lydia Roberts and Spencer Roth-Rose knew they wanted an elegant outdoor celebration for their June 2024 wedding despite the risk of storms. They took advice from Lydia’s mom: “Plan for rain, but enjoy the sun!”

The decision to get married on the Island was an easy one. Lydia’s family has owned a home in Chilmark for decades, and Spencer began visiting after the couple started dating in 2016. Lydia knew the summer months are a busy time for Island weddings, so even before they were officially engaged, the couple booked certain vendors.

The sizable guest list and overall challenges of hosting a reception at the family home led them to select The Captain R. Flanders House in Chilmark as their all-in-one venue. Besides its ability to accommodate a tent from Big Sky Tent and Party Rentals, “the view of Bliss Pond was the main reason we chose it,” said Lydia.

Anticipating the logistical puzzle of planning a wedding from afar, the couple hired planner Patrie Grace of With Grace to help. One essential detail they needed her to handle: transportation for guests staying across the Island, which All Star Tours and Transport MV handled flawlessly.

The couple’s vision of “fun, bright colors” was evident in every aspect of the day, from the pink and purple floral arch at the ceremony to the accompanying bouquets and centerpieces created by Emily Coulter at Morrice Florist. “We wanted the whole event to feel earnest yet playful, a representation of our personalities and approach to the whole wedding weekend,” Lydia said.

Cocktail hour fare included cheese boards and sesame-crusted shrimp, along with a spectacular sunset. The signature cocktails were an inside joke for the couple: “The Jerry” and “The Elaine” represented the TV show Seinfeld, which they watched after “marathon wedding planning sessions,” said Lydia. Under hanging seagrass lanterns, the guests dined on steak and swordfish from V. Jaime Hamlin and Sons Catering & Party Design. A tiered cake decorated with pressed flowers from baker Val Stoyer of Val Cakes added a final floral flourish to the evening.

A wedding band that every generation could enjoy was a nonnegotiable for the couple, and The Sultans delivered. Photographer Randi Baird captured every moment of the weekend, from the welcome dinner photographs to the very last dance.

And not one drop of rain fell.
