Isabelle & Alden

A whimsical fall wedding day in downtown Edgartown.

Isabelle Jubin was working in Edgartown during the first summer of the pandemic when a coworker invited her to a socially distanced lawn party. Amongst card games, cornhole, and blueberry pie she met Alden Southworth. Isabelle thought she detected some interest from him, but was surprised when he left early to join friends. Later she learned that Alden had told his friends: “Guys…I met a girl tonight…and she was pretty great.”

Conveniently, they were both living in Manhattan, so meeting up off-season was easy. And with a strong connection to the Island – Alden’s family has roots that date back to the 1700s and Isabelle’s parents were longtime renters and eventual homeowners – they continued to visit once they started dating. “We couldn’t have imagined officially starting the rest of our lives together anywhere else,” Isabelle said. “The people we’ve met, the friendships we’ve made, and now the families we’ve joined together on this Island hold the utmost importance to us.”

Engaged in October 2022, they had a year for planning, however they found it a challenge not being on the Vineyard. Setting up regular Zoom and phone calls to describe some of the whimsical details they envisioned for their day helped wedding planner Patrie Grace, of With Grace, make them a reality. But an occasional weekend trip to meet in person with vendors felt critical, especially to see a demo of the tent décor imagined by florist Justin LaVigne, of Of The Vine, consisting of blueberry branches, moss, vines, and tea lights.

Choosing a fall wedding date led the couple to incorporate the colors of the season along with some pops of pink and orange. Three Principessa cakes from Val Cakes were covered in pink, green, and yellow marzipan. Isabelle’s dress was even a beige, golden tulle with a marigold sash.

Unpredictable autumn weather also worked into their plans. After a tented reception at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House in Edgartown, they led a march in the rain to Atria for the after party with Isabelle brandishing a stylish umbrella.

Isabelle and Alden weren’t afraid to let their personalities shine through at their wedding – pointing out that there wasn’t much white at all – which is why they advocate that planning couples should stick to their own personal styles rather than following a tradition that isn’t right for them.

“A lot of people will try to tell you what your wedding has to look like,” Isabelle said. “It’s your day, so make it look and feel like one of your own!”
