Alexandra Berry and Grant Ladner never expected to meet their soulmates during a night out in 2018 at Groovy’s in Oklahoma City. But there, among the neon lights and ’80s throwback jams, the two hit, well, a groove.
After Alexandra beckoned Grant over with a wink, the pair got to talking, and their spark soon traveled all the way to the distant coast of Martha’s Vineyard, where they tied the knot last October. Alexandra had been coming to the Island every summer since she was fourteen and had always known she’d end up celebrating her nuptials on the historic streets of Edgartown.
“I had been walking around town one fall morning when I passed by the [Dr.] Daniel Fisher House,” she said. “I immediately fell in love…I knew that’s where I wanted to have it.”
With the help of Doriana Klumick from Plan It Martha’s Vineyard, her teenage dream unfolded in real life with a traditional ceremony at the Old Whaling Church, which included both an organist and pianist for the music, followed by the cocktail hour and reception at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House next door. Under an elegant, transparent tent meant to mimic a greenhouse, the reception featured all-white décor (with pops of deep green and gold) for a timeless look. One of Alexandra’s favorite details was the hydrangea floral runner in the seams of the head table. “Aubrey [Sirois of Aubrey Maria Designs/Donaroma’s] brought my floral vision to reality and exceeded every expectation,” she said.
For an intimate and relaxed celebration, the two kept the invite list relatively short, only inviting close friends and family. “Everyone there knows you so well, it allows you to be yourself the whole way through,” Grant said. “If I make a fool of myself on the dance floor, it’s not like the whole night is ruined.”
Despite Grant’s limited dance acumen, the party had no trouble getting started thanks to the Dukes of Circuit Avenue. The band performed so many hits, some partygoers had a hard time letting them go at the end of the night.
“Grant’s cousin tried to bribe them to keep playing,” Alexandra said.
Now that the newlyweds have settled back into their lives in Oklahoma, Grant as an accountant and Alexandra as a mortgage loan originator, the two have nothing but fond memories of their Edgartown weekend.
“I love that we had a smaller, intimate wedding and we were able to soak it all in,” Alexandra said.
