Marjorie & Sam

A large Martha’s Vineyard wedding with many classic and enviable elements.

Sam Mott and Marjorie Adams of Boston were able to plan – and pull off – a large Martha’s Vineyard wedding with many classic and enviable elements: a glorious fall weekend that was warmer and sunnier than expected; a brunch and tennis tournament; a welcome dinner and dance party; and, finally, a beautiful outdoor ceremony on a family property.

Marjorie credits wedding planner Sandy Brooks, of Timeless Event Planning, with making “what could’ve been a very stressful process into one that felt manageable.” Over the years, both Marjorie and Sam have visited and enjoyed the Vineyard as their “happy place,” but that does not always translate into practical knowledge relevant to planning an event – or several events in one weekend.

The weekend began on Friday with a tennis tournament and brunch at the West Chop Club. “It was a chance for people to get competitive and become friendly,” Sam said. “The weather couldn’t have been better, which was good because we really didn’t have a rain plan.”

Changing plans was necessary that evening, though, when guests headed to Atria in Edgartown for an “absolutely mandatory” Woodstock costume-themed rehearsal dinner and dance party. When the band was setting up in the courtyard outside, they recognized they would need to move inside to comply with the town’s noise curfew. “Having the dancing within an enclosed space made it feel more fun and intimate,” said Marjorie.

On their wedding day, the couple exchanged vows on the lawn of Sam’s grandparent’s house on West Chop, overlooking Vineyard Sound. “The backdrop to our ceremony was beautiful, and it was amazing to have the sun break through on an otherwise cloudy day,” he said. Following the ceremony, guests gathered in a tent on the grounds of the club for the reception. White flowers paired with blue and white chinoiserie vases created a classic clean look.

Sam and Marjorie appreciated that so many of their friends and family wanted to lend a hand prepping for the big day, including her mom and his parents. They especially recall how their officiant, Sam’s younger sister, Eliza Mott, added her creativity, humor, and soulfulness to the ceremony, forever sweetening their experience.

“This is bringing back good memories,” said Sam.
