Ceremony and Reception: Vineyard Haven Yacht Club

Emily Franklin and David Traficante have Fenway to thank for their introduction – the Fenway Franks, to be exact. “That’s where we met,” Emily said of the co-ed softball team on which the two played in 2009. “My sister was dating Dave’s best friend and we were all on the same team.”

That year the Franks won the championship. A year later, David won Emily’s heart.
Next came several years of nursing school for Emily and medical school for David, then a December engagement, and finally an October wedding. “We wanted to get married on the Vineyard because I grew up there and my parents were moving to Florida right after the wedding,” said Emily, now a postnatal nurse. “It was kind of a last celebration type of thing.”
David, an E.R. doctor, also had an Island connection. “He used to go to Martha’s Vineyard every summer with his family.”

The couple chose the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club for its intimate vibe and roaring fireplace by the water, perfect for what turned out to be a clear but chilly day. “I wanted a whimsical feeling, not nautical, which was a challenge at a yacht club, but we pulled it off,” she said. For both the ceremony and the reception, Emily's inspiration came from her Monique Lhuillier blush gown. “I used lots of burgundy and ivory flowers, and peach-colored roses to go with my dress,” she said.

Emily took a DIY approach with the decorations and incorporated plenty of local details. Oyster shells from the Net Result were used as place cards; The Beetlebung Farm Cookbook, by Island chef and farmer Chris Fischer, served as a guest book. “We love cooking, so an Island cookbook was the perfect choice,” she said.

The couple also hired a day-of coordinator to put finishing touches on their plans – a smart move, Emily said, because if there’s any advice she can offer future brides, it’s not to worry about the details of the party, and instead enjoy the day with your husband.

“Stick together throughout the whole evening. It’s so easy to lose one another and everyone is trying to pull you in different directions,” said Emily. “We made an effort to stick together the whole time. Doing that really made the entire day even more special.”
