Ceremony + Reception: Private Home in West Chop
Lucy Cuneo and Will Sarsfield have a wedding-photography business, so it’s not surprising that their own celebration would be picture perfect. They live in South Carolina, where the business is based. But they were married in Maine (it was a January elopement) and then held a second ceremony and a summer celebration on Martha’s Vineyard, as the Island is where they met. “My stepmother, Mara Liasson, began her career as a reporter on the Vineyard,” Lucy recalls, and “introduced my father to the Island many years ago.” Since then, Lucy has come to the Vineyard every summer. It was during an annual visit a couple of years ago that fate delivered Will to her, from the shores of England to the shores of Martha’s Vineyard.
Her future husband was crewing on the schooner Rebecca, Lucy says, “but we met aboard the Shenandoah – which was incredible luck because we both nearly missed the sail!” With only forty-eight hours left before her summer stay on the Island was ending, Lucy spent every minute with Will. They’ve been a couple ever since. “It seemed only fitting that we would return to the place we were brought together. And we were so lucky to be able to have the wedding in my father’s garden.”
The celebration came together through the combined efforts of Lucy, Lucy’s mother, and wedding planner Patrie Grace – with a little help from friends and family. Lucy’s cousin Eddy sang during the ceremony. “He sang
a Ray LaMontagne song for us, which was amazing,” Lucy says. “We are very close, so it meant the world to me. He is only seventeen, very brave of him.” The couple’s photographer,
Michael Simon, was Lucy’s mentor when she was starting out in the business, and Lucy was thrilled he was available. Lucy’s mother, Lisa Burgett, made the lovely dragonfly table cards, the place cards, and pretty much anything with a guest’s name on it. “My mom even ordered bathrobes for each guest with his/her name and the date on it!” Her mother’s “thoughtfulness and detailed eye was, in large part, what made the wedding so spcial,” Lucy notes. “It was an extraordinary effort. She had a very clear vision, which Patrie executed so well.”
