Our Cover Stars: Amanda & Pete

They fell in love with MV as a couple. So there was no second-guessing where they would say their “I do's.”

It was “a match made in Hoboken,” Amanda Cuppi and Pete Jordan said of the night they met at a birthday party in New Jersey. Amanda, a teacher, was a student a Penn State at the time, while Pete, a management consultant, was working in banking. “We met, talked, exchanged numbers,” said Amanda. Five years, three apartments, two dogs, and numerous trips to Martha’s Vineyard later, Pete asked Amanda to marry him during a sail around Edgartown Harbor on the wooden yawl Magic Carpet.

Amanda, who has been coming to the Vineyard since childhood, said that she couldn’t wait to introduce Pete to the Island. “We fell in love with it together as a couple,” she explained. So there was no second-guessing where they would say their “I do's.” “When I introduced Pete to the [Harbor View Hotel], we always enjoyed walking down off the busy main street...sitting on the rocking chairs…and watching the boats in the harbor.”

They booked the hotel for their ceremony and reception, and settled on a subtle nautical theme. The twelve bridesmaids wore sea-glass-green dresses and latitude/longitude necklaces, while the eight groomsmen wore socks with sailboat decals, navy blue suspenders, and bow ties with polka dots. The flowers, from Morrice Florist, were beachy and summery with garden roses, delphiniums, ranunculi, and lots of hydrangeas in whites, pale blues, and greens. Inside the hotel, monkey fist knots held up table names made to look like the iconic Island town signs.

“Pete and I are known to be the ‘couple on the move,’” Amanda said. To date they have lived in four different states together. So to signify where they have been, they integrated a sand ceremony into their vows with sand collected from all of their favorite places. “We took turns pouring the sand into one jar, which we [now] keep on our sofa table to remind us of where we have been, and where we still will go,” she explained.

Though planning their wedding from across the country was sometimes challenging, everything fell into place in the end. Amanda fondly remembers writing on social media the weekend of her wedding that she and Pete couldn’t wait to have all of their favorite people in their favorite place together.

“That,” Amanda said, “truly became the theme of the wedding weekend.”
