Ceremony and Reception: The Stoney Hill Road House

Massachusetts native Ryan Byrne was teaching English in Toulon, France, when she met Lucas Wilde, a Brit backpacking through Europe. They struck up a five-year transatlantic romance, and recently started a new life together in Los Angeles, where Ryan works as a school psychologist and Lucas is a filmmaker. With families stationed on both sides of the pond, they opted to marry in the middle. Ryan has been visiting the Vineyard since childhood and introduced Lucas to it when they began dating.

Planning a destination wedding on the opposite coast meant a lot of online research and emailing. They found The Stoney Hill Road House, a rental property in West Tisbury, where the ceremony, reception, and guest lodging could all be held on site. “Not only were we able to have a week-long vacation with close friends and family, but we were also able to relax with everyone after the reception in the theater room and play shuffleboard,” said Ryan. They also took on plenty of creative DIY projects, including making their own invitations and favors, and hired Plan It Martha’s Vineyard to make sure all the pieces fell into place.

On their wedding day, Ryan walked down the outdoor aisle in a summery dress by BHLDN, her head wreathed in a floral crown. Tyson, the couple’s seven-pound Pomeranian, wore a bow-tie collar and cuffs. The couple said their vows beneath a rustic wooden arbor decorated by Ryan’s father and Lucas’s stepfather.

Inside the 1,500-square-foot barn where the reception was held, guests sat banquet style at one long table sheathed in bright blue cloths. “We wanted to be able to spend time with everyone at the wedding,” said Ryan. As night fell, the barn took on a warm glow. Beneath strings of bistro lights muted by gauzy curtains, guests grooved to a mix made by Lucas and his brother. In the rotation: the Dead 60s, a British (naturally) ska-punk band.
