Evan & Brian

Ceremony and Reception: Private Beach and Home

A love of the water brought Evan O’Connell and Brian Scall together. While working as a Best Kiteboarding sales rep in Florida, Evan traveled to the company’s New York branch, where Brian worked. We met, says Evan, “and the rest is history.” Evan and Brian now reside in Hatteras, North Carolina, where they own their own business, The Dancing Turtle Coffee Shop.

They enjoy anything to do with the beach and being outdoors. (Evan opted out of wedding-day mani/pedis to go kitesurfing with her husband-to-be, her father, and some friends!) A casual ceremony with the sand between their toes was a perfect fit. The beach ceremony also meant their beloved dogs, Jackson and Haddie, could be there. As for the reception, Evan says, it was held at her parents’ home in Edgartown, “one of the most spectacular, beautiful places we have both ever been.”

The color palette was in keeping with the beach theme. Brian, his groomsmen, the officiant, and the bridesmaids were dressed in the blues and greens of the sea. Evan’s wedding dress stood out with its sea-foam colored detailing, while Evan’s mother wore a dress that evoked the look of sand. The flowers consisted of natural beach grasses and fresh wildflowers. Tables at the reception were named for some favorite kiteboarding locations around the world and were adorned with seashells. In lieu of a traditional head table, Evan and Brian had their own table, which they dubbed "Coast Guard Station" – in honor, Evan says, of “one of our favorite local spots in Hatteras.”

The reception had fare befitting a casual, beachy wedding – a traditional clambake and, in place of a wedding cake, key lime pie. “We brought and served our own coffee,” says Evan. Guest takeaways included a pound of coffee and a Dancing Turtle ceramic mug. “Because it was so nice and small,” Evan says of the intimate celebration with just their closest friends and family, “you could really feel the love.”
