Daniel & Amanda

Ceremony: Private Home
Reception: Beach Plum Inn

Sometimes love takes a while to blossom. Daniel Zane and Amanda Shallcross were in the same nursery school class and grew up a few blocks from one another in Pleasantville, New York, crossing paths now and then over the years. However, it wasn’t until New Year’s Eve in 2006, when Dan sought out Amanda a few minutes early for a “practice midnight kiss,” that the couple clicked.

Amanda had been coming to the Vineyard with her parents her whole life, and she and Dan became frequent summer visitors. “Dan says that he first realized that he wanted to marry me while we were having drinks on the roof at the Seafood Shanty [in Edgartown],” Amanda says.

“Dan and I wanted a casual yet elegant Vineyard wedding, so we looked for things that reminded us of the Vineyard, as well as things that would ensure that our guests would have a good time.” They also included some tie-ins to their childhood, with grade school photos and a save-the-date card featuring their nursery school class picture.

The couple chose the Gay Head Lighthouse for their August ceremony, which was officiated by a friend of Amanda’s mother, Rev. Patricia Barrett of Falmouth. “The reverend read portions of letters that we had written her explaining why we wanted to marry each other. We did not realize that she was going to read them out loud,” Amanda says, “but it was a really nice touch.”

The Beach Plum Inn in Menemsha hosted the couple’s lively reception. “We really wanted a wedding where everyone was up and dancing the whole time, so we went with Mike Benjamin,” whose band provided flip-flops for those wearing uncomfortable shoes. “Guests still come up to me and say how much fun they had and how amazing the band was. We will certainly remember how much fun we had...and I think our guests will too.”
